Type ratings are required for “large” aircraft, or those aircraft designated by CASA as “large”. Certain engine types may also require a ‘type’ approval. A comprehensive list is provided in Appendix IX of the Part 66 MOS (Reference: Part 66 MOS, Pages 122 to 149).
In general, type ratings are require for aircraft which fit into one or more of the following three categories:
- Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) over 5700kg
- Multi-engine helicopter
- Other aircraft which CASA has designated as requiring a type rating
